The Unlikely Missionary

Lessons Learned Along the Way

In 1977, Stephen Barrett won the NCAA gold in wrestling, but by the next morning, the happiness had faded.

He realized that having goals apart from God would not bring him lasting fulfillment. Although Stephen was a Christian, he had wrestled for his own glory, but now, he wanted to commit his life to God and use his athletic talents for God's glory. Soon after, he joined a team of wrestling-missionaries called Athletes in Action, a decision that would lead Stephen and his family to live in the former Soviet Union where they had the fascinating experiences related in this book. The Unlike Missionary show how God worked in his life and used surprising and unexpected circumstances to teach him valuable lessons.

About the Author

Stephen Barrett joined Athletes in Action after he and his wife, Cindi, graduated from Oklahoma State University. He and his family served as missionaries in Austria, Moscow, the Caucasus Mountains of Russia and Mongolia. Stephen and Cindi live on a farm in Missouri, and he continues to be involved in AIA ministry. The Barretts have three children and twelve grandchildren.

What Others are Saying

"This book gives a glimpse into the life of a couple who against "common sense" would demonstrate that God will use those who are willing to follow Him to do extraordinary things for His Kingdom. Stephen is a pioneer missionary, willing to go where others would not."

John Peterson, 1976 Wrestling Olympic Champion

"From the plains of Oklahoma, the Mongolia Steppe, and the Caucasus Mountains of Southern Russia come stories of God's work through an "unlikely character" that will encourage and inspire all who read it. God is on the move around the world in amazing and creative ways."
